BioFÓRUM returns in 2024 with the theme ‘Nature Restoration’

On 19 and 20 October 2024, the BioLiving Association is organising the eighth edition of the BioFÓRUM Conference, under the motto ‘Nature Restoration: from Law to Action!’, in the district of Aveiro. The European Nature Restoration Law, in the Portuguese context, will be discussed through talks by experts from various fields and field trips.

BioLiving is once again organising the BioFÓRUM, which this time is focusing on the theme of Nature Restoration.

With researchers, technicians, associations and all interested citizens in mind, the VIII Bioforum - Restoring Nature: from Law to Action! will be an opportunity for dialogue and reflection on how the Nature Restoration Act, recently approved in the European Union, could affect land management and nature conservation in Portugal.

The programme includes talks by experts from various fields and field trips to discuss the European Nature Restoration Act in the Portuguese context.

On 19 October, in Albergaria-a-Velha, the programme includes several talks that will bring perspectives from various geographical scales and different sectors. Dr Anabela Simões (ICNF - Direção Regional da Conservação da Natureza e Florestas do Centro) and Dr Guilherme Castro (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Royal Holloway University of London) have been confirmed, among others. On the same day, there will be a round table with speakers from different sectors - from academia to local authority management.

On the second day, 20 October, there will be two guided tours of micro-reserves being restored by BioLiving: in the morning, to the Lusitanica project, in Canelas, Estarreja, and in the afternoon, to the Quinta Ecológica da Moita, in Oliveirinha, Aveiro (the latter in collaboration with Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Aveiro).

The ecological restoration of our forests and other degraded ecosystems is fundamental to ensuring food supply, climate regulation, public health and so many other services that nature offers us. Occurrences such as the recent rural fires are becoming increasingly frequent and brutal, which shows the importance of integrated and responsible land management for the protection of our communities and biodiversity. BioFÓRUM aims to contribute to the debate and reflection on these important issues.
