The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Aveiro and the Associação BioLiving have signed a collaboration agreement to make the Quinta Ecológica da Moita (QEM), in Oliveirinha, Aveiro, a space for environmental awareness and nature conservation.
The invitation for joint management came from the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Aveiro, which recognised BioLiving's expertise in the management and rehabilitation of forest areas and in the promotion of educational programmes based on the enhancement of natural resources. QEM is now part of the group of micro-reserves managed by Associação BioLiving.
One of the main objectives of this collaboration will be the sustainable forest management of the QEM, reopening it as a space for environmental awareness and education, and for promoting civic participation, through volunteering activities, scientific camps (BioCamp®) and various recreational or scientific initiatives. QEM will soon be launching an environmental programme open to the public, as well as the opportunity to book private activities such as ecological birthday parties and the like.
The institutions now co-managing QEM will make every effort to create jobs, as well as scientific research opportunities, and are open to receiving internships or academic theses. Both non-profit institutions will also make a joint effort to find sources of funding, which is fundamental to improving the conditions for visitors and making QEM more dynamic.
The signing of the protocol was attended by representatives of the governing bodies of both institutions, who were very happy and eager to reopen the QEM to the community.
Quinta Ecológica da Moita (QEM) is a unique woodland area in the Aveiro region. Covering just over 14 hectares, it includes a century-old oak grove, ponds, agricultural areas and several excellent spaces for environmental education. With dozens of species of fauna and flora, many of which are threatened and protected, it is also an important place for nature conservation, 5 kilometres from the urban fabric of Aveiro. It has places suitable for camping and tenting, changing rooms and spaces for training and workshops.
